Respect to the Bird

On my long run this morning (6.97 miles - oh yeah!), as I passed underneath the beautiful old bridge, I came across a man fishing in the canal. There was a heron some twenty yards further along the towpath eyeing us both.

I wished the man a good morning and jokingly added "You've got a bit of competition there!" pointing to the bird.

"Well, funnily enough," he smiled "I saw that heron and took a photograph of him. Then I set up and began fishing. After a while I got a bite and caught my first fish.

He flew over to me and stole it off the hook!

He's quite tame you know."

I ran on, past the heron, who didn't even budge from the path. I smiled at him as I passed. Respect to the bird.
