How to really switch off on holiday

I'm going away tomorrow with my nearest and dearest for a well earned holiday.

So, in order to make the most of my time, I am mindful of what I take with me. Part of switching off, involves, well, switching OFF.

If you'd like to do the same when you take a break, allow me to explain by way of the items in the above photo (from left to right)

  • A notebook (Man and Superman). This was given to me by my wife. It's not my Bullet Journal, but a pocketable, simple paper notebook. I use it to note thoughts, inspiration, directions and Backgammon scores. And because it's not my day to day journal, just using it tells me it's holiday time and reinforces the fact that I am to do less.
  • A paper book - On holiday I try to read more. And I read more paper books. I first read Laurie Lee's Cider with Rosie at school as part of my O level English Literature. The book captured me and took me to a world I glimpsed as a child in the 1970's. Last summer I read "As I walked out one Midsummer Morning" and again the poetry of Laurie Lee's writing enchanted me. I can't wait to start Village Christmas.
  • A dumb phone. It's waterproof and the battery lasts weeks. Two people have the number, my wife and my mum. I tell people "If you want to get hold of me call either my wife or my mum and get them to give you the number (hat tip to the late Randy Pausch) and if they think it important enough to give you the number, that's fine."
So far I've never been called, but I can text and call if I need to. No apps, no email, no interruptions, just bliss.
  • A real camera. I love my Fujifilm X100. It's old, it's simple, but it just works, and with no lens choice you just have to move about a bit.

Apart from food, drink, board games and good company, this is all I need when I go away.
